Don’t worry if you don’t. Most individual traders and many professional fund managers would have a hard time explaining how they decide how much they risk on each trade.

Would you like to gain a trading edge in this critical area?
Would you like to understand position sizing strategies enough to be able to trade more confidently and with less emotion?

With Dr. Tharp’s Introduction to Position Sizing Strategies E-learning Course, You Can!

Dr. Tharp believes that—aside from your personal psychology—your position sizing strategies are the most important factor in your trading success.

“Analyzing your trades in terms of their reward-to-risk characteristics allows you to focus on the most important aspect of trading—'how much,' also known as position sizing [strategies].” —Van Tharp, Active Trader Magazine, October 2005

Dr. Tharp’s Introduction to Position Sizing Strategies Course includes audio-visual and interactive learning activities that explain this complicated subject in clear, easy-to-understand terms.  You will learn the basics of position sizing strategies and the dramatic difference they can make in your results.  These are the secrets that top traders apply every day.

In addition to lecture material contained in this course, you will play Dr. Tharp's world-renowned Marble Trading Game.

This game is designed to test your position sizing skills and teach you the importance of choosing your position sizing algorithm based on your objectives. You play this game with several virtual players who have different objectives, use different position sizing strategies, and finish with different equities.  You will learn some extremely valuable lessons from the game regardless of whether you finish with the highest equity.

What You Will Learn

• How to meaningfully measure your trading results based on what you risk in each trade.

• A fast and simple position sizing technique.  You don’t have to be an advanced or even intermediate trader to use this simple method like a pro. This strategy could easily help you avoid worrying about or realizing catastrophic losses.

• How to make trading easier by using proper position sizing strategies.  Improper position sizing strategies make it harder for you to achieve your objectives, and they can also make trading a very emotionally-charged activity.

• Whether your position sizing strategy is supporting your objectives or preventing you from reaching your trading goals. Using optimal objective-based position sizing strategies can make a world of difference in your trading results.

• How to define equity.  This course presents three ways to calculate equity.  How you define equity can make a huge difference in how you choose and apply your position sizing strategies.

• What to expect from your trading system in the future.  Finding the risk-adjusted returns for your trading system allows you to create a position sizing strategy that gives you confidence in achieving your objectives.

• Position sizing strategies apply to FOREX, stocks, futures, and options.  Just as trading these instruments is slightly different, applying position sizing strategies to each of these markets is slightly different although equally as critical.  You can see this in position sizing examples for the various markets.

• An advanced position sizing strategy used by a number of top traders.  This strategy allows you to minimize your risk and protect your equity while multiplying your earnings at an accelerated rate.

"I now realize all along that the main flaw in my lack of success in trading has been the lack of position sizing.
This course has been an eye opening experience for me."
—Joe Rogers

What Others Say About Position Sizing Strategies

“Position sizing strategies could very well be the most important aspect of a trading system . . . Position sizing methods can be the key factor in whether or not you stay in the game or whether your gains are huge or minimal.” —Trader Mike,

“One of the recipes of success, at least according to non-academic literature, is to control one’s risk and utilize proper ‘money management.’ The definition of money management is not perfectly clear and according to trading coach Van K. Tharp, it is not ’risk control’ per se, ’diversification’ or ’how one makes trading decisions’ as sometimes stated (Tharp, 1998). Risk control and maximization of profits is rather a result of implementing money management strategies. Tharp emphasizes that money management or position-sizing answers the question: ‘How much?’ or ‘How many?’.” —Johan Ginyard, Masters Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Psychology, Sweden

“Money management is like sex: Everyone does it, one way or another, but not many like to talk about it and some do it better than others. But there's a big difference: Sex sites on the Web proliferate, while sites devoted to the art and science of money management are somewhat difficult to find.”— Gibbons Burke,

"If you have an approach that makes money, then money management can make the difference between success and failure... ... I try to be conservative in my risk management. I want to make sure I'll be around to play tomorrow. Risk control is essential." — Monroe Trout

“Dr. Tharp has become the de facto major voice on just what ‘Money Management’ embodies. Many traders, particularly ‘beginners’ are focused on their technical system, simple entry rules, and quite likely stops, but neglect position sizing entirely, thereby risking far more of their capital than is wise, particularly if trading is their intended livelihood.”—Serious Trading Demands Money Management, "amg" Review from

Questions and Answers

Q: What is the on-line streaming format for the new course? Do I need to buy and install a player before I can watch it?

A: The course relies on Adobe Flash technology. Adobe Flash is downloadable for free for those who do not already have it functioning with their browser. You do not need to buy a specific player for this e-course to run on your computer.

Does the on-line format mean I must always be connected to the internet to view the course, or can I download the course?

Yes, you need to be connected. You'll need a broadband internet connection.. The on-line course is sort of like a subscription, and it expires in 60 days. 60 days provides more than sufficient time for the student to view the course several times and master the material.

Are you also bringing out an advanced position sizing course?

We plan on providing more advanced e-courses on position sizing strategies, but the first of those is more than a year away.

Is the information in your "Introduction to Position Sizing Strategies E-learning Course" essentially the same as in the How to Develop a Winning Trading System that Fits You Home Study Course?

The Systems Development Home Study Course assumes the student has some knowledge of position sizing strategies, so it does not cover basic level material much at all. The on-line course only covers introductory level material though it covers that material thoroughly. There is some overlap in material between the two; however, the Systems Development home study goes into more advanced position sizing strategy material.

How much does the e-course differ from your Definitive Guide to Position Sizing book?

The e-course is an introduction to position sizing strategies. It covers basic material and offers a great start to the process of understanding and utilizing the concepts. The Definite Guide covers a very extensive array of the topic and goes into technical depth in many areas. It is indeed quite definitive. A number of people find position sizing strategies a complicated topic and have a hard time grasping and applying the ideas from the book. We developed the e-course for two primary groups of people: auditory/visual learners who learn more effectively from an instructional format that is full of interactive features and those who are not interested in the deeper technical aspects of position sizing strategies but realize an introduction to the topic would still help their trading.

We see a natural course of study starting with the e-course and then moving up to the Definitive Guide.

If the Definitive Guide has a lot more depth and detail and covers a wider range of subjects, why not just buy the book?

The book absolutely has more extensive information than the e-course; it earns its Definitive title. If you are someone who neither wants nor needs an introductory course to a complicated subject, by all means, start with the Definitive Guide to Position Sizing.

Will there be an e-version of The Definitive Guide to Position Sizing?

We have no plans for an e-version of the Definitive Guide.

Does the IPSS course address position sizing strategies at the portfolio level? For example, I am trading S&P 500 stocks and at any one time I may have up to ten open positions. The number of open positions can vary from zero to ten. This is not trading one stock sequentially.

The concepts taught in the IPSS can be applied at the portfolio level although the course does not cover the topic specifically. Dr. Tharp writes more about this topic and provides guidance on portfolio risk levels for it in his book The Definitive Guide to Position Sizing.
